Two hour trip to the hotel, 6 hours of restless sleep filled with fire works, car traffic and worrisome feelings of missing the alarm, 4 alarms set and a freakin' parakeet in the Delta check in line. This bird was flying around on top of peoples heads and perching on their luggage. If that wasn't a significant sign for us... what is? We left our home in great company with a full time renter this summer so we can go explore the world.
We are on our way to journey on to Mexico!
Wow. I think I'm finally speechless and if you know me, you know, I am never speechless!
We started the day at 5:30 am after a few hours of interrupted sleep (silly me for being on the parkway the eve of July 4th). We got to the airport, had a hiccup or two there, ran into wonderful people who were helpful. We boarded our plane and had no other traveler in our row!
We then got to Cancun, took an expensive AF taxi to the Isla Mujeres ferry and ended up eating lunch at the pier! I was so worried and consumed about just touching down, this was a hard thing for me to do. Gia was getting impatient and her behavior reminded me that stopping and just sitting in the moment was really important. We figured out that my online ferry purchase e-mail was the ticket and all we needed to do was board. First obstacle in Spanish language was DONE! Onto the next, ordering lunch at this pier side bar as we wait.
Gia and I were both so hungry. I was nervous to be sitting at the bar with all this luggage, our life possessions for the next six weeks packed into 5 bags. What was a momma to do? I realized then, I had to just stop worrying and trust in the process. As we sat there she asked a ton of questions, went to the washroom without my assistance and then proceeded to let me know she wanted to be in the water today.
My plan was to pop onto the ferry, which we did eventually get on and just take another taxi to the Air BNB and explore from there. Things quickly changed.
To our suprise our host was there and waiting for us. He showed us around quickly and then told us he was going off to work. He looked at Gia and asked her what our plans were... she said the beach.
Within ten minutes of our touch down into the Air BNB we found ourselves sharing a taxi with our host, who showed us onto the beach. We literally got into our room, found our suits and left for the beach. He let us know he would be going back home from work at about 8pm.
So let's recap this. No sleep, bird flying, early flight, hot weather, a lunch at the bar, ferry ride to Isla, taxi to the spot and suits on! My thoughts were... if I can last that long not he beach we will see you back at the meeting spot at 8. After all, I have no idea how to get back!
Oddly enough, we lasted that long! We got some food after a long swim and looked at the shops on the tourist strip. We then proceeded to find cherros, freshly made for 45 pesos and we were off to meet our host, Omar! Just click his name to find his sweet little spot on Isla Mujeres!
He told us about a snorkeling excursion we participate in with the company he works for. We met him at the small shop and waited for a taxi. It was a busy night so we hopped on a bus for 20 pesos each person (2 dollars for Gia and I to ride) and arrived at our studio at 8:15 pm. Gia really enjoyed the bus ride.
We got showered and Omar took us to the local grocery store. I spent just under 500 peso's and got a few days worth of snacks and breakfast (that's just under 25 dollars)!
We got in at 9:45pm and made some phone calls!
For the most part, Gia's been great. I got her into bed and she was snoring within minutes!
Ps- she told me in the bus "this is pretty cool" then we held hands. I'm hoping this trip brings her clarity on life, a new outlook and a desire to want to know more about other cultures, people and places!
I forgot to tell everyone, we left the phone home. Gia was starting to become obsessed over her phone and the apps on it. Day ONE no phone for Gia... 44 more to go!
